Although only operating in the US at the moment we think Facebook’s Place Tips might be something to watch out for.
Following an initial trial in New York, Facebook have announced that they are rolling Place Tips out across the US and businesses can request a free beacon to enable them to start using the feature to communicate with customers or potential customers who are in the vicinity.

Facebook have been giving their ‘beacons’ free of charge so they can use them to target individuals with relevant news and offers while they are in the area.
Marketers have been talking about proximity marketing for a long time and although there have been some successful campaigns it has never really taken off it the way that was forecast. One of the main concerns amongst consumers has always been that it can feel too intrusive. We’ll be watching the results from this latest Facebook development with interest to see how popular it is.
