Social media is a great way to connect, communicate and engage with your audience. During the pandemic, we have truly seen how the power of social media can help you to stay in touch with your clients and customers. But, how you do it is the key to success.

I wanted to share my tips on how you can continue to engage your audience through social media and which tools you can add to your strategy along the way.
- Defining your audience
Having chosen which platforms are best suited for your business, you now need to define your audience. You want to target people who are interested in your content, who will share, comment and like your posts regularly. I believe it is all about the quality, not quantity, of your followers. If you try to sell to everyone, you’ll end up selling to no one. So, understanding your target audience is key in the first step of your engagement strategy as it allows you to deliver your message to the right market.
- Content plan
Next, I would recommend establishing the goals you want to achieve when writing your social media content plan. This could be selling a product or service, building brand trust or increasing website traffic.
It’s important to cultivate a range of different content types, including industry news, tips & tools, company news, polls & more. Creating unique content for each of your demographics is key to connecting and bringing value to your audience.
- Communication & Engagement
Whilst you are considering topics for your content plan, it is important to decide on what tone of voice you wish to use to communicate with your audience. Are you relaxed, informal and chatty, or would a more professional tone suit your business better? Do you want to use emojis? How about puns? You may also wish to alter your tone depending on which social channels you are using. For example, on Twitter you may want to take a relaxed approach however, on LinkedIn, you may consider a more formal tone for your communications.
Consider asking questions to encourage engagement and start a conversation with your audience. As well as increasing your overall engagement, this will create a bond with your audience and increase the likelihood of brand loyalty. I’d also recommend writing a compelling headline which draws your reader’s attention. And don’t forget to tag relevant companies or news sites to encourage a re-share!
Another great way to encourage engagement and increase follower numbers is by hosting a competition. Maybe you could offer a new product, or a free trial of your services, and encourage your audience to follow your page and like and share your post in order to enter. You could even ask your customers to share a positive experience for the chance to win a prize!
- Hashtags!
Researching the most commonly used hashtags for your industry is key in reaching your audience. Hashtags make it easier for people to find relevant topics which match their interests. This used to be the case for just Instagram and Twitter but more recently, LinkedIn and Facebook have gotten in on the act and both platforms are now actively encouraging users to utilise hashtags to discover new content.
- Visuals & Videos
Finally, (and possibly most importantly!) we have visuals and videos. I would highly recommend introducing a unique and professional visual element to support your social media posts. This will ensure your content stands out from your competitors and enables you to better showcase your products and services. Research from Social Media Today also states that content with relevant visuals receive 94% more views than content without!
The latest trend in social media videos is the ‘how-to’, where your target audience can learn and implement your best tips and tricks, as well as share them with others. For more information on this, check out our handy guide here.
