So you’ve realised that social media is actually a really important marketing tool for your business. Congratulations! Welcome to the club. Now with any club, there are some rules that you need to follow to make sure you’re getting the most out of your social media and you aren’t just wasting your time.
“Rules?!” I hear you cry. “But you hate rules!” Yes, dear reader we do. But unfortunately in life there are some rules that you just have to follow. Those are the rules you see. Anyway, at the risk of sounding like our old school teacher, here are some definite dos and absolute do nots of social media.
Do know your audience
Always know who you’re talking to and who you want to see your content.
Don’t think you can get away with not doing video
Even if you’re not on TikTok, when you realise that video content tends to receive 10x more engagement that static, you’re going to want to turn that camera on and get filming.
Do think why
Please. I beg you. Before you post, think about why you’re posting and what the point of it is. Don’t post for the sake of it. It will be a waste of your time.
Don’t ignore your analytics
The more you check them out, the more you’ll learn about what to do and what not to do in future. They are your guide. Use them!
Do check out your competition
Knowing your competitive landscape is pretty good advice for marketing in general, so it makes sense that it applies to social media too!
Don’t make it all about you
Because, ultimately, it’s not about you. It’s about your audience.
Do invest in content
It’s definitely a good idea to invest a bit of time researching, planning and creating your content. If you’ve got a designer to help, even better! Quick, reactive content is great but don’t think you can just rely on that. Planned content is also hugely important and the right type of content will help you stand out amongst all the noise.
Don’t keep doing the same thing over and over
Mix it up, try out different types of content out and see what works.
Do spend the time
Contrary to the belief of some, a great social media presence doesn’t happen overnight. So if you want it done well, you’re going to have to put the time in.
Don’t be boring
No one likes boring. Boring won’t make you stand out, and it certainly doesn’t sell. Try thinking outside the box and spend time coming up with creative and and engaging content ideas. It will pay off – we promise!
